You learn to figure out just what emotions you are feeling, saying your upset is fine but upset could anything - it could be anger, frustration, loneliness, stress. All those emotions can make you upset so you’re best to work out which EMOTION it is and say exactly that.
When we label our emotions it brings us back online. The part of your brain (PFC) that doesn’t get caught up in emotions lights up, and then you can see things more clearly because you’re not all aught up in a BIG emotion.
Once your back online you have more of a chance to problem solve whatever it was that created the BIG emotion.
Lastly, BIG emotions show up in our bodies, we feel them they aren’t just in our head. Notice how it FEELS to be angry, sad, annoyed.
